Fleets could reduce their CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by utilising smaller engine vans, a study has concluded.

The research – conducted by TNO and CE Delft on behalf of Transport and Environment – claims that new vans could be up to 16 per cent more fuel efficient and ten per cent cheaper to buy if fitted with smaller engines.

The study states that the use of smaller engines in vans is ‘simple’, especially when considering the financial benefits fleets could take advantage of.

Vans such as the Peugeot Bipper, Citroen Nemo and Vauxhall Combo are prime examples of how small engines can retain both power and success. There were even calls for the uptake of the frugal Nemo to be incentivised last month.

Prices for the aforementioned Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall ranges start from just £11,537, £11,602 and £10,897 respectively.
