Fiat has updated its largest van, the Ducato panel van, with new, greener engines to keep it in line with European emissions legislation.

The new Fiat Ducato has been revamped for 2012 to keep up with stricter diesel emissions laws in vans sold across Europe.

Luckily, Fiat can use some of the engines seen in its car range including the former International Engine of the Year winner, the MultiJet diesel range.

The new Ducato now comes with two 2.3-litre MultiJet engines developing 130 and 150bhp. At the top of the range, a new 3.0-litre MultiJet engine also meets emissions criteria.

Fiat predicts the new three-strong range of engines will cut emissions by up to 15 per cent compared to the older models.

The engines will be available for panel van and chassis cab versions of the Fiat Ducato, including the chassis designed to be used in motor homes.

In keeping with the facelift under the bonnet, the cabin has also been revamped for 2012. The most noticeable changes come in the shape of a redesigned central console and plenty of new equipment.

This includes a sound system and space for a TomTom satellite navigation along with a wood trim for motor home versions.

The new Fiat Ducato van and motor home version will be on show at the Motorhome Caravan and Camping Show at ExCel, London, this month, Fiat has confirmed.

The Fiat Ducato van has been on sale in the UK for over 30 years and over 2.2 million vehicles have been sold in that time.
