Ford Transit to go electric

Ford has teamed up with a leading electric technology company to deliver an electric version of the Transit Connect to the UK in summer 2011.
Ford says the Transit Connect will eliminate fleet’s use of diesel and petrol in small vans and help lower operating costs.
The Azure Force Drive battery will give the all-electric Transit Connect a range of up to 80 miles on a full six to eight hour charge and will produce zero exhaust emissions.
Glider units – vehicles without the powertrain – will be shipped from Ford Otosan in Turkey to Azure in Europe for final assembly.
The Transit Connect Electric will then be sold by Azure under a full Ford warranty – meaning repairs will be carried out in Ford Dealerships as usual.
Regarding the Transit Connect Electric, Chairman and CEO of Ford Europe, John Fleming said: “It gives the customers the option of being among the first to adopt this environmentally friendly technology."
The current Ford Transit Connect is available from just £13,450, with the all-electric version due for a summer 2011 launch in Europe.
