The Ford Transit was once again the best-selling van in the medium commercial vehicle sector according to the Society of Manufacturers and Trader (SMMT).

The Ford Transit totalled 3,905 sales in July, top for the month and the rolling year. 24,987 Transit vans have been sold since 1 January; the vans market share for the year up 0.7 per cent on 2009 to 23.7 per cent.

Overall Ford commercial vehicle sales in July were up 1,461 to 5,242. The company’s market share for the month therefore increased also, by 3.3 per cent to 25.6 per cent.

In what was a tough month for the automotive industry as a whole, 17,309 new vans were registered, taking the sales for the rolling year up 0.1 per cent to 204,514.

“July was another surprisingly good month for vans, with useful growth," surmised SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

Despite this positive surge in new van registrations, Everitt believes the rest of the year will be challenging for the industry. The forecast for 2011 looks strong however.

The Ford Transit range starts from £17,115.
