Ford Transit inspires landmark electric minibus

A model based on the iconic Ford Transit chassis and built by electric vehicle manufacturer Smith Edison has become the UK’s first 17 seat, all electric minibus.
On a full charge, this benchmark-motor has a range of up to 100 miles and a top speed of 50mph. Recharging the 40kwh lithium-ion battery pack can take as little as 3-4 hours with Smith’s new fast charging technology, 6-8 hours without.
The Edison has been manufactured especially for urban operations including airport passenger transfer, city trips, tourist attractions and close campus travel on commercial, industrial and military sites.
Essex County Council are the first to purchase the Edison and will be putting it to use by transporting people with learning disabilities in the Harlow area. Yvonne Chappell, Head of Fleet Transport and Operations for Essex County Council said: “We take sustainable transport very seriously."
The Ford Transit minibus, the inspiration behind the Smith Edison, is the most popular in its class and has a start price of £23,369. It is renowned for being a tough, flexible vehicle that can hold its own in any situation.
