Ford says that it will continue to concentrate on diesel power as it believes it is still the best option for commercial vehicle operators.

Speaking about the expected influx of electric commercial vehicles, the company’s Commercial Vehicle Director Steve Clary stated that diesel engines remain top priority:

“Our strategy will be to concentrate on diesel power and eeking out every single improvement we can in terms of efficiency of those powerplants."

Although acknowledging there is a market for the Ford Transit Connect – which will be released in summer 2011 – Clary believes that due to the pricing and the relatively small infrastructure, it will be a niche for the foreseeable future.

“There will be some customers that want [an electric commercial vehicle] and it’s important we have an option for them," he said.

The Ford Transit is the bestselling van this year with more than 23,000 units sold, and the company believes the introduction of the cut-price Leader series will further strengthen its position at the top.

The Ford Transit is available from £17,155 and is this year celebrating 45 years in the UK.
