The Government has announced that six successful bidders for electric vehicle charging infrastructure will share £660,000 match funding.

Three councils in Yorkshire and the West Midlands, a community group in the Isle of Lewis and a private business in Essex are among the winners that will benefit from this cash injection from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

This could see the Ford Transit Connect Electric trial programme, which is currently in place in Hillingdon, London, be extended across the country.

It’s also paving the way for the electric vans of tomorrow, including the Renault Kangoo Express, which is currently partaking on the French company’s pan-European Z.E (Zero Emissions) roadshow.

This financial boost, along with the Plug-In Grant, is evidence that the government is striving to make the UK a low-carbon world-leader.

The mentioned Ford Transit Connect Electric and Renault Kangoo Express are both due for release in 2011. Prices are yet to be revealed.
