Industry insiders from AEA and Department for Transport say the use of frugal vans such as the Citroen Nemo should be encouraged and incentivised.

The statement comes as a report concludes that the weight of a van load has little impact on CO2.

The report commissioned by the Department for Transport discovered that a fully loaded van weighing 50 per cent more than when empty only emits around seven per cent more CO2 on a combined cycle.

It also states that a medium-sized van is likely to push CO2 output by nearly 40 per cent in comparison to a smaller van, which could lead to taxation on the use of larger vans.

As a result, the environmental experts from AEA endorse the uptake of low CO2 vans - specifically the Citroen Nemo – which do not compromise on practicality.

They say that Citroen’s Nemo light van represents a ‘forlorn hope in the current political and economic climate’.
